Approved by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme
InterConnect gathers 50 European entities to develop and demonstrate advanced solutions for connecting and converging digital homes and buildings with the electricity sector.
The digitalization in the energy sector has started: get to know our results
Overview
The project places the foundation for the future of smart energy management solutions by seven connected large-scale test-sites in Portugal, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece and France.

Objectives
The main goal? Bringing efficient energy management within reach of the end-users.
Large-scale pilots leading to market driven deployments
Marketplace of integrated digital platforms bridging the gap between Iot and energy
Establish interoperability framework validating SAREF and semantic interoperability
User centric energy and non-energy services
Expected Results
The solutions developed within the scope of InterConnect will allow a digitalisation of homes, buildings and electric grids based on an Internet of Things (IoT) architecture.
By including digital technologies (Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Cloud and Big Data) based on open standards, such as SAREF, it will guarantee the interoperability between equipment, systems and privacy/cybersecurity of user data.

Get to know the Interoperable Recommender
The Interoperable Recommender is a data-driven solution aimed at enabling the participation of consumers in enhancing the resilience of the European energy infrastructure. This novel service harnesses the potential of innovative algorithms and leverages the publicly accessible ENTSO-E Transparency Platform to assess country-specific vulnerabilities related to loss of load and generation curtailment.
The Interoperable Recommender provides:
- a methodology to assess periods of expected system vulnerability in Europe’s energy infrastructure
- an assessment of system vulnerabilities and determine the best operating conditions for the grid, considering the status of each member state and its neighbours/interconnections
- the definition country-level actions (increase/decrease energy consumption) during specific hours to enhance resilience
- a sharing of information with other interested parties with direct integration in separate backends
Energy App
Flexi App Italian Pilot
The Flexi App functionality has been embedded in production within the Planet App environment and will let available for 3 large scale Social Housing districts in Milano, namely Merezzate , Urbana, and Moneta.
The Flexi App customization for the Italian case leverage on the following set of tools deployed/embedded within the InterConnect framework:
- Transparency Platform (ENTSO-E)
- Semantic Interoperable Framework (SIF)
- Interoperable recommender service

Greek Pilot App
A mobile app for the Greek pilot participants of the EU-funded InterConnect project developed by AUEB-RC. The app is used for user interface/engagement purposes, monitoring of energy consumption, and remote control of devices.
This app is integrated with the Interoperable Recommender.
Greek pilot will collect KPIs based on 3 approaches:
- Indirect based on smart-meter consumption data compared to historical consumption patterns. This will reflect any change of consumption habits after the deployment of the recommender.
- Direct based on push notification feedback by the end-users
- Survey/Questionnaire that will be distributed at the end of the demonstration.
Get to know the Semantic Interoperability Framework
The InterConnect project is executing several large-scale demonstrations across Europe. The Semantic Interoperability Framework (SIF is the basic of all Interconnect pilots. Each pilot has its own purpose, but they have one thing in common: interoperable nature that sponsors repicability.
In this sense, the project pioneers cross-domain semantic interoperability without a centrally hosted facilitator leveraging SAREF ontology. Validation is occurring in seven connected large-scale test-sites in Portugal, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, and France
Get to know the DSO Interface
DSO Interface is a cloud-based platform to access a set of services that uses flexibility services in a distributed approach and increases observability of the low voltage grid, ensuring access to new standardized flexibility products provided by smart homes, buildings, and communities in mew marketplaces through a fully interoperable and replicable interface.
Who has the opportunity to take advantage of these solutions?
- Energy users in buildings
- Manufacturers
- Distribution grid operators
- Energy Retailers
