R&D and consultancy

The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, with sites in Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Bremen (with an associated branch in Osnabrück) and a project office in Berlin, is the leading German research institute in the field of innovative software technology. In the international scientific community, DFKI ranks among the most recognized “Centers of Excellence” and currently is the biggest research center worldwide in the area of Artificial Intelligence and its application in terms of number of employees and the volume of external funds.

An important element of DFKI’s mission is to move innovations as quickly as possible from the lab into the marketplace. Only by maintaining research projects at the forefront of science DFKI has the strength to meet its technology transfer goals.

Within the Knowledge Management Research Department, DFKI investigates and develops innovative approaches for personal and inter-organizational information exchange and knowledge sharing. The Language Technology Department does cutting-edge R&D on human language man-machine dialogue in various settings. The recently founded Deep Learning Competence Center (DLCC), located in Kaiserslautern, provides a sophisticated environment for the development of various deep learning-based technologies, including image and video processing, multi-modal signal processing, application of personalized mobile sensors, and environmental monitoring.

DFKI benefits from interaction with the Universities of Kaiserslautern, Saarbrücken, Berlin and Bremen and in turn provides opportunities for research and PhD thesis supervision to students from these universities, which have an outstanding reputation in Computer Science or related fields.
