Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU University Amsterdam; VUA), established in 1880, is a Dutch institution for higher education and scientific research. VUA offers high-level higher education, offering 47 undergraduate programs and 92 master’s degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. The VUA has seven faculties, approximately 22,000 students and a staff of 3,200 including 1,800 academic and administrative and technical 1.400.

Scientific research in the faculties includes natural sciences, psychology, pedagogy, medicine, economics, law, arts, computer science, earth science, biology, movement sciences and social sciences. VUA is consistently rated (see e.g. the Times Higher Education University Ranking 2010) among the 140 best universities in the world. VUA hosts one of the leading Semantic Web research groups worldwide. VUA researchers have delivered key contributions to internationally renowned methodologies, frameworks and languages for knowledge engineering and Semantic Web technologies. This includes chairing W3C working groups for RDF 1.1, PROV, SKOS, and OWL. VUA researchers have been active over the years in a wide range of European efforts (from FP2 to H2020) including, recently, Big Data Europe, LarCK VISTA-TV, NoTube, Open PHACTS, and EuropeanaConnect. The group has specific expertise in applying its research to applications in the cultural heritage, media and biomedical domains through close collaborations with (Inter)national institutions.
